Julie & David kicked off their video coverage with a fun and unique rehearsal dinner Thursday at Easley’s Winery downtown. The evening started with an enlightening tour of the facility (I had never been to a winery before), then continued with wine-tasting and a buffet dinner. It was a treat to see my friend Mary Means of Stacy & Mary Photography (who referred the couple to me – thanks, Mary!) there sans camera as a guest with her husband Derek, who was in the wedding party.

The next day, I joined another very talented friend, Nate Rowe of Nathaniel Edmunds Photography, alongside Shelly Valentine outside St. Mary Catholic Church for some fun shots with the whole wedding party and their families. (Nate took some great shots of our kids earlier this year, ironically the day before David booked us and asked what I thought of Nate, whom he was considering hiring. How fortuitous!) Ceremonies can be by-the-numbers sometimes, but this one felt so much more personal due to the genuine warmth of the couple and their relationship with the parish and officiants.

The reception was my second in a week at the elegant Bridgewater Club, where we finally had some perfect fall weather for cocktails and additional photos outside. (Hard to believe it was 30 degrees warmer just six days earlier!) The ballroom was tastefully decorated by Flowers by Tiffany, with each table named after a location significant to the couple’s relationship. It was a joy as always to work with my good friend and neighbour Jim Cerone, who MC’d with his usual classly, personalized touch and kept the dance floor hopping throughout the evening with kids and grownups alike.

What a busy week! In addition to being involved in open houses at the Eiteljorg Museum and Mavris Arts & Event Center, plus the usual weekly editing routine, we had TWO weddings to cover on Friday – a first for us in a year of many firsts. The same team that covered the spectacular Lauth wedding back in May was reunited with us for Brandy & Craig’s big day, including event designer Gary Bravard (thanks for the referral, Gary!), photographers Dan & Brooke of Brand Photo & Design and the Indiana Roof Ballroom.

Laurie covered all the festivities this time around, beginning with an intimate ceremony at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in the Meridian Kessler area, noting that Brandy was one of the most stunning brides she had ever seen. The reception at the Roof was truly amazing with unique touches everywhere, including a way-cool Maui photo guestbook, Gary’s trademark extravagant decor, the ballroom’s signature light show introduction, and a huge tower of custard-filled rolls held together by chocolate, for lack of a technical term. Yum!

After a couple of weekends off, we kicked off our fall season on a summer-like day for Marie & Kamal’s wedding at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church. They were referred to me by the Hilton’s Michelle Strong, who hit it off with the couple and stayed on as an excellent day-of consultant after they switched their reception venue to the Bridgewater Club. Once there, master photographers Jim and Lois Wyant of were able to get some great shots of the couple at a covered bridge on the property. The reception was a fairly casual affair with no formal introductions or speeches, just friends and family having a great time. DJ Sunny Moon did a splendid job of mixing the dance floor classics with peppy Sri Lankan music to keep guests of all ages and cultures happy and on their feet. Later in the evening, Marie surprised the guests by switching from her white gown to a stunning sari.

I capped off our busiest summer ever in style last Friday with Lindsay & Brian’s elegant wedding and reception at the Omni Severin Hotel downtown. While Julie Acheson of Royal Creations was dressing up the ballroom in a stunning black and white floral motif, I joined photographers Bobbi+Mike for some fun shots in the bridal suite, on the big staircase, and outside on one of the nicest days we’ve had all summer. While the guys were fairly subdued behind the scenes, the ladies were having a blast, thanks to Bobbi’s energy and some hoppin’ tunes on an iPod. This spirited, easy-going bride didn’t want or need any accessories and was ready to party!

Dr. Scott Toussaint presided over the beautiful ceremony, giving us the backstory on each of the ceremony’s traditions as the couple went through them. After the couple recessed under a shower of petals (my favorite of Julie’s special touches), we took Lindsay and Brian outside for some more fun shots as the wind really picked up. The dinner time was as lovely as always, and the Omni’s Carrie Sprague (who along with Bobbi referred the couple to me – thanks, ladies!) spoiled us as she always does. Jeremy Gearries of DJs Direct kept the music relatively contemporary much to the crowd’s delight. The dessert bar was to die for – a perfect ending to a perfect summer wedding season!
